Tala launch a new natural wonder with the ‘Basalt’ light
Product update. The Basalt has been removed from production whilst they do further development tests. We will update, once notified.
Our very own Finn McCool would be so proud that one of his creations has made it onto the world stage of decorative lighting. Inspired by the thousands of extruded basalt columns that make up the Giant’s Causeway, the Tala Basalt unites sand-cast solid brass and mouth-blown glass to evoke nature’s magnitude.
Inspired by epic rock formations
From their origins as bulb and fixture manufacturers, Tala was founded by friends at the University of Edinburgh with a shared passion for design, technology and sustainability. Guided by the founding promise of ‘Conservation Through Beauty’, they have now revealed their first fully holistic lighting solution. The ‘Basalt’ visual design consists of irregular hexagonal columns emitting an ambient light, inspired by the epic rock formations of the Giant’s Causeway. The product is made with solid sand cast brass, dimmable LED and Translucent matte borosilicate glass.
“It was like looking through a portal to the Earth’s crust, I’ve always been heavily inspired by patterns throughout nature, but this one was particularly unusual for its rectilinear form. You don’t see many straight lines in nature, so I can’t help but be drawn to them when I do.” Joe Armitage, Tala Design Director

Expression of mathematical beauty
The Basalt ceiling light is an expression of mathematical beauty in nature, with its angular forms, irregular hexagonal patterns that can provide wonderful possibilities for the modern interior, where both robust material and ambient lighting can coalesce to create the mood for a space.
